Former Site of the Ningbo Branch of the Bank of China for Commerce

The former site of the Ningbo Branch of the Bank of China for Commerce is a cultural relic protection unit of Zhejiang Province.

The former site of the Ningbo Branch of the Bank of China for Commerce is located at No. 37 Waibei Road, Waibian Community, Zhongma Subdistrict, Jiangbei District. Situated at Ningbo’s Three-River Junction, it faces east and has a construction area of approximately 2,000 square meters. The existing building was constructed in 1930, initiated by Ningbo natives residing in Shanghai such as Ye Chengzhong, Yan Xinhou, and Zhu Baosan, and designed by Germany’s Siemens. The building served as the office of the Ningbo Branch of the Bank of China for Commerce until the early days of the liberation.

The existing building is divided into eastern and western sections. The eastern façade is further divided into southern, central, and northern parts. Both the southern and northern sides are three-story buildings, while the middle section is a six-story building. The western part consists entirely of single-eave three-story structures, with a corridor in the center. Its main entrance façade is pagoda-shaped, clad in black marble, with double iron doors, giving it a solemn and dignified appearance. The steps and the second gate are decorated with white marble. The interior ceilings and surrounding walls feature plaster decorations, reflecting characteristics of foreign architectural culture.

The former site of the Ningbo Branch of the Bank of China for Commerce is an important witness to the historical evolution of Ningbo’s finance and the Bund area, and holds significant value for preservation and research. In January 2017, it was announced by the People’s Government of Zhejiang Province as part of the seventh batch of provincial-level cultural relic protection units.
