Former Residence of Li Shufu

The former residence of Li Shufu is a cultural tourism attraction.

The former residence of Li Shufu is located at No. 28–30 Munan Road, Heping District. It was a private residence built by Li Shufu in 1937. Constructed with a brick-and-wood structure and rendered walls, the first floor features three arched entrances on the main façade, while the second floor has a large terrace supported by four hexagonal columns topped with Corinthian-style carvings. The entire building boasts a simple and classic style. The interior includes a well-appointed living room, study, bedroom, dining room, and more. The building is enclosed by high walls, forming a self-contained courtyard, and is a high-end residence with European classical architectural features. This former residence is now used by the Tianjin Municipal Education Commission and is listed as a cultural relic protection unit of Tianjin.

Li Shufu was a descendant of one of the "Eight Great Families" of early Tianjin—the “Li the Philanthropist” (Li Chuncheng), the nephew-in-law of Cao Kun, the President of the Beiyang Government, and the son-in-law of Cao Rui, the Governor of Zhili Province.

During the occupation period, Li Shufu owned a significant amount of Kailuan stock, which was considered a “hot commodity” at the time, with rapidly rising prices. He sold off a large portion. Since he never engaged in business himself, he entrusted all the proceeds to relatives and friends to manage, setting up numerous speculative trading firms.
