On the morning of the 15th, the woman from Taichung surnamed Shi, 47, hiked in the Heping Mountain area with her children but collapsed from chest tightness near the entrance of the Wogewei Mountain hiking trail. Her family urgently called 119 for help.
The nearest Heping Brigade ambulance of the Taichung City Fire Bureau was already on a call, so the Dongshi Brigade’s ambulance was dispatched as backup. By the time the Dongshi Brigade arrived, the woman had no pulse or breath.
The Heping Brigade of the Taichung City Fire Bureau stated that the woman’s family called at 10:16 a.m. on the 15th, but the brigade’s only ambulance had been dispatched at 9:22 a.m. to Taiwan Route 8 for another medical emergency.
The Heping Brigade explained that while their sole ambulance was attending to a medical case on Taiwan Route 8, the command center redirected the Dongshi Brigade to the hiking trail entrance.
The Dongshi Brigade is about 31 kilometers from the incident site. Their ambulance arrived at the scene 33 minutes after dispatch—without delay—but the woman had already passed away.
The family cried and told responders that the woman had forgotten to bring her heart medication and that no one in the family knew CPR, expressing deep sorrow over the tragic loss. 1031216
