China Finance Museum

The China Finance Museum is located at No. 29 Jiefang North Road, Heping District, Tianjin (the former site of the "French Club" built in 1932), just a stone's throw from Tianjin Railway Station, commanding the historic Jiefang Bridge, situated on a well-known street densely populated with financial institutions, and positioned at the center of the under-construction Tianjin Financial City.

The museum covers an exhibition area of approximately 2,400 square meters and houses a vast collection of Chinese currency, financial instruments, and other financial artifacts from various periods. The exhibition content is divided into five sections and eight special topics: The first section focuses on the history and current state of finance, covering the origin and development of money, financial institutions and tools, financial markets, corporate restructuring and mergers & acquisitions, and international financial institutions; the second section explores "Finance and Us", including topics such as finance and entrepreneurship, finance and industry, finance and war, finance and politics, finance and science, and finance and art; the third section presents the history of Chinese currency, featuring stories from the grassroots, the history of Tianjin’s financial opening, a hall of financial figures, and milestones in finance; the fourth section is a special exhibition on financial crises and financial tsunamis, showcasing topics such as the subprime mortgage crisis, consumer credit, the Great Depression, the 1987 stock market crash, economic cycles, the Asian financial crisis, hyperinflation, and financial fraud and scandals; this special exhibition content will be updated periodically, with the next special exhibition focusing on the origins of credit cards. The fifth section features special-topic exhibitions, including gold-themed exhibits, currency-themed exhibits, a special exhibition on the financial history of Jiefang North Road, and a planning exhibition for the core financial zone of Binhai New Area.

The museum employs a new design philosophy, utilizing a variety of exhibition methods such as sound, light, electricity, video, and physical objects to provide visitors with a comprehensive and clear introduction to the historical development of finance. The China Finance Museum uses display and collection as its basic tools, with appreciation and education as its main themes. It is dedicated to popularizing financial knowledge, conveying financial concepts, interpreting financial innovation, addressing key financial issues, and promoting exchanges within the financial industry. It is currently the only professional museum in China that offers a comprehensive overview of Chinese financial history, a full perspective on financial knowledge, and a connection between the current state and future of financial industry development.

The China Finance Museum was initiated by the Asia School of Business. During the museum’s preparation, it received strong support from all sectors of society: Li Guixian, former Governor of the People's Bank of China and State Councilor, personally inscribed the museum’s name; Tang Shuangning, Chairman of Everbright Group, not only contributed a long calligraphy scroll but also donated the manuscript of Adam Smith’s "The Wealth of Nations"; Gao Xiqing, General Manager of China Investment Corporation, donated several precious items that witnessed the development history of China’s capital market; experts and scholars such as Chen Zhiwu, Lifetime Professor of Finance at the Yale School of Management, Li Hong, Managing Director of China International Capital Corporation, Tang Shisheng, Senior Vice President of Founder Group, and Zhang Yongquan, Head of the Finance Department at Tianjin University of Finance and Economics, provided professional and academic advisory support; international friends such as Allen Lee Schleyer, Director of the Museum of American Finance, and Edward Cox, U.S. Senator from New York and son-in-law of former President Nixon, visited the museum for exchanges. During the preparation period, government agencies including the Tianjin Municipal Government, Tianjin Financial Affairs Office, Heping District Government of Tianjin, Heping District Financial Affairs Office of Tianjin, and the Cultural and Historical Committee of the Tianjin CPPCC, as well as institutions like Tianjin Datong Investment Co., Ltd., Beijing Financial Training Center, Tianjin Land and Resources and Housing Authority, Tianjin Library, Tianjin Archives, the First National Archives, the Beijing Mint Coin Exhibition Hall, and major commercial banks in Tianjin, all offered substantial support.
