Former Residence of Lin Xiuzhu

The former residence of Lin Xiuzhu is a cultural tourism attraction.

The former residence of Lin Xiuzhu is located at No. 38 Changde Road, Heping District. This building was constructed under the name “Risheng Hall” by Lin Xiuzhu. In the spring of 1938, Lin Xiuzhu and his family moved here. It is a three-story brick-and-wood Western-style house designed by a renowned American architect. There is a large terrace in front of the downstairs windows, an entrance hall upon entering, and the staircase is located on the right, with the living room to the right and the dining room to the left. Directly opposite is a study. The study is named “Chenghuai Pavilion,” reflecting the pursuit of a serene and refined atmosphere. The second floor houses the bedrooms of Lin Xiuzhu and his wife, as well as those of their eldest son’s family, along with a separate study. The third floor contains the bedrooms of the second and third sons’ families. The top of the third floor is a concrete flat roof that serves as a large terrace. The new residence includes a basement, which houses the boiler room, storage rooms, and heating radiators. There are both front and back yards; the front yard has a gatehouse, while the back yard has a bungalow where the servants lived. Both yards are planted with crabapple trees, pear trees, and other flowers and plants. This residence is currently used as the Fourth Kindergarten of Heping District.

Lin Xiuzhu (1884–1948), courtesy name Maquan, was from Yexian County, Shandong Province (now Laizhou City). He studied at a private school in his childhood and ranked first in the provincial imperial examination at the age of 17. In 1902, during the 28th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty, he went to Japan to study. After the founding of the Republic of China, he returned to China upon completing his studies. He subsequently served as Academic Dean of Shandong Higher School, Section Chief of the Shandong Education Department, and Director of the Education Section of the Office of the Governor of Shandong Province. He was instrumental in establishing six specialized vocational schools in Shandong—covering law and politics, commerce, industry, agriculture, medicine, and mining—and advocated for the creation of over 70 vocational schools of both Type A and Type B.
