Former Residence of Rongqing

The former residence of Rongqing is a cultural tourism attraction.

The former residence of Rongqing is located in Qingyun Lane on Xinhua South Road. The area mainly consists of three-story, row-style brick-and-wood buildings, which were originally inhabited by China's elite and upper class. The buildings have largely retained their original appearance to this day.

Rongqing (1862–1917), of the E'zhuo'er family, with the courtesy name Huaqing, was a member of the Mongolian Plain Yellow Banner. Born in Chengdu, Sichuan, he moved to Beijing at the age of 18. A successful candidate in the imperial examinations, he served as Minister of Justice, Minister of Rites, Minister of Revenue, Minister of Education, concurrently as Grand Secretary, and as a Grand Councilor. After the Xinhai Revolution, Rongqing and his family relocated to a residence in the British Concession of Tianjin.

Early Years

In 1879 (the fifth year of the Guangxu reign), Rongqing passed the imperial examination as a Juren (recommended man) at the age of just twenty. He later earned the titles of Gongsheng (tribute student) and Jinshi (presented scholar), and entered the Hanlin Academy. As a result, he was appointed as an education official for the Bordered Blue Banner, rising through the ranks to become Attendant Reader and then Mongolian Bachelor.
