Former Residence of Yan Xiu

The former residence of Yan Xiu is a cultural tourism attraction.

The former residence of Yan Xiu is located at No. 144 Chongqing Road, Heping District. After the establishment of the Republic of China, Yan Xiu moved to this place. The residence is a two-story European-style brick-concrete structure with a construction area of 670 square meters, forming an independent courtyard. It has been listed as an immovable cultural relic in Tianjin that has not yet been designated as a protected cultural heritage site.

Yan Xiu (1860–1929) was a renowned modern educator and scholar, as well as a pioneer in reforming feudal education and advancing educational modernization. His courtesy name was Fansun, his art name Mengfu, and he also used the alias ??Tui??. He was born in 1860 in Haining, Zhejiang Province. He was of Han ethnicity and came from a family that had long been in the salt trade.

In his childhood, he received a traditional education and was well-read in classical texts. In 1882, he passed the provincial imperial examination (xiangshi), and the following year, he became a successful candidate in the highest imperial examination (jinshi). He later served in the Hanlin Academy of the Qing Dynasty. He held positions such as Compiler in the Hanlin Academy, Associate Compiler in the National History Office, Proofreader in the Office of the Collected Statutes, Educational Commissioner of Guizhou, and Vice Minister of Education, overseeing national education.
