Former Residence of Yuan Kewen

The former residence of Yuan Kewen is a cultural tourism attraction.

The former residence of Yuan Kewen is located at No. 93 Chengdu Road, Heping District. It was originally the property of former military officer Shi Yousan, known as Shijie Li (World Inside), a British-style terrace house with three stories, built with brick and wood in a rather ordinary design. This was where Yuan Kewen once lived during a later period when his life was relatively financially strained.

Yuan Kewen (1889–1931), courtesy name Bocen, art name Hanyun, was from Xiangcheng, Henan Province. He was a renowned Kunqu opera artist and one of the Four Gentlemen of the Republic of China. Often referred to as the “Boss of the Tianjin Green Gang” during the Republican era, he was the second son of Yuan Shikai, the President of the Republic of China, born to his third concubine, Lady Jin, in Seoul, Korea. His elder brother was Yuan Keding. He was known as "In the south there are Huang Jinrong and Du Yuesheng; in the north there is the Tianjin North Boss Yuan Hanyun." Well-versed in the Four Books and Five Classics, skilled in calligraphy and painting, fond of poetry and prose, and an avid collector of paintings, calligraphy, and antiquities.
