Former Residence of Zhang Xiyuan

The Former Residence of Zhang Xiyuan is a cultural tourism attraction.

Zhang Xiyuan retired from politics in 1924 and took up residence in Tianjin. His home was located on Bakeda Road in the British Concession (now No. 4, Tongdali, Baoding Road, Heping District). The residence is a three-story building with a basement, featuring alternating red and blue bricks. It was originally the property of the father-in-law of Puyi, the last emperor of China, then sold to Cao Kun, and later resold to Zhang Xiyuan. The house remains well-preserved.

Zhang Xiyuan (1863–1940), courtesy name Gamín, was a native of Hexicun Village, Miyun County, Shuntian Prefecture (now part of Beijing), Zhili Province. He was a military leader during the late Qing and early Republican period, and a figure within the Beiyang Government and the Zhili clique.

Born in 1863 during the second year of the Tongzhi reign in the Qing Dynasty. He came from a modest family background.

In the fifth year of the Guangxu reign (1879), at the age of 17, he went to Gubeikou to enlist under the command of Ye Zhichao of the Zhengding Army.

In the seventh year of the Guangxu reign (1881), he was selected to attend the Yuguang Martial Arts Academy affiliated with the Zhengding Army at Yuguan, where he studied alongside classmates such as Bao Guiqing and Tian Zhongyu.
