Former Residence of Zhang Zizhong

The former residence of Zhang Zizhong is a cultural tourism attraction.

The former residence of Zhang Zizhong is located at No. 60 Chengdu Road, Heping District. During his tenure as Mayor of Tianjin, in August 1936, he purchased a vacant lot known as Houde Hall Chuanji on London Road (No. 60 Chengdu Road) in the British Concession under the name Qing’an Hall. The land covered an area of 4.356 mu, and a building was constructed on it. The main building has three floors, the rear building has two floors, totaling 16 rooms, with an additional 14 single-story rooms in the courtyard, making the total built-up area over 1,400 square meters. The first floor of the main building houses a meeting room; the second floor has two terraces; the third floor features a rooftop terrace; the first floor of the rear building is a dining room, and the second floor is a study. To the right of the entrance gate is another single-story room that also serves as a meeting room, while the left single-story room functions as servant quarters and a gatehouse. This building is currently listed as an immovable cultural relic in Tianjin that has not yet been officially designated as a protected cultural heritage site.

Zhang Zizhong, courtesy name Jinchen, was born in August 1891 in Linqing County, Shandong Province. Influenced early on by the revolutionary ideas of Sun Yat-sen, he joined the Tongmenghui (Chinese Revolutionary Alliance) while studying at Tianjin Law and Politics School, and later gave up scholarly pursuits to join the military. In September 1917, he entered the service of General Feng Yuxiang. Due to his diligence in studies and bravery in battle, he earned Feng’s high regard, rising from soldier to the rank of 38th Division Commander and Commander of the Zhangjiakou Garrison, Chairman of Chahar Province, Mayor of Beiping, and Mayor of Tianjin.
