Former Residence of Zheng Shiqi

The former residence of Zheng Shiqi is a cultural tourism attraction.

The former residence of Zheng Shiqi is located at No. 41 Jianshe Road, Heping District. Built in 1925 and designed by the renowned architect Shen Liyuan, the mansion consists of two buildings—north and south. The southern building is a two-story brick-and-wood structure with a red-tiled sloped roof and a basement. The northern building is a partially three-story brick-and-wood structure adorned with outdoor sculptures and also includes a basement. Behind the north building lies a rear building, which is a two-story brick-and-wood structure (with a third floor added in the early 1970s), featuring very small rooms that were used to house servants. There is an external staircase outside the rear building connecting it to the north building. Zheng Shiqi lived here after 1925. The residence is currently used by the Xiaobailou Hospital in Heping District and is listed as an immovable cultural relic in Tianjin that has not yet been officially designated as a protected heritage site.

Zheng Shiqi, born in 1873, was a native of Dingyuan County, Anhui Province (now Nanbeifen Village, Xiangdao Township, Feidong County). His courtesy name was Yunqing, and his registered name was Yuqi. His grandfather, Da Ren Gong, was a lifelong farmer; his father, Youru, held the military rank of Youji in the late Qing Dynasty and was conferred the title of Deputy General; his birth mother was Lady Zhou; his stepmother was Lady Zhang; he was also the paternal uncle of the famous Chinese stage actor Zheng Rong.

Zheng Shiqi was intelligent from a young age. He originally lived with his stepmother in his hometown but, due to her jealousy, moved to Shandong at the age of fifteen to live with his father and study there. In 1890, he was admitted to the Anhui Provincial Army Training School and graduated in 1893, after which he began his military career.
