Former Residence of Lu Hongtao

The former residence of Lu Hongtao is a cultural relic protection unit of Tianjin.

The former residence of Lu Hongtao is bordered by Jianshe Road to the east, Qufu Road to the south, Hubei Road to the west, and Tai’an Road to the north. It is a brick-concrete structure covering a land area of 2,060.67 square meters, with a building area of 1,958.80 square meters.

This building was originally bought by Zhang Hu, the Beiyang Minister, but was soon sold to Lu Hongtao. It is bordered by Jianshe Road to the east, Qufu Road to the south, Hubei Road to the west, and Tai’an Road to the north. The brick-concrete structure features a mansion-style design with partial three floors and a basement. The entrance façade is supported by a mix of square and round columns framing a polygonal foyer, above which sits a balcony. At the center of the flat roof stands an octagonal, fully enclosed pavilion with a sloped roof. The interior rooms are luxuriously decorated. The building has largely retained its original appearance and remains in good condition.

Lu Hongtao (1866–1927), courtesy name Xiancha, was a native of Tongshan, Jiangsu Province. He was a military leader of the Beiyang Clique, initially affiliated with the Anhui clique before later joining the Zhili clique. He graduated from the Artillery Department of the Tianjin Military Preparatory School, where he was classmates with Duan Qirui and Wang Zhan Yuan. Later, he served as an attendant to Tao Mo, the Governor-General of Shaanxi and Gansu, and went to Gansu. His younger brother, Dong Shi’en, once served as Vice Minister of Finance in the Beiyang Government.

Biography

During the late Qing Dynasty, Gansu organized a new army, but only one mixed brigade was formed, consisting of three battalions. Lu Hongtao successively held positions such as Drill Commander of the Gansu New Army, Company Commander of the First Battalion of the First Battalion of the Gansu Standing Army, and Commander of the First Battalion.
