In 1908, Shangyu businessman Chen Chunlan donated 50,000 silver dollars to establish Chunhui Academy in Hengshan, Xiaoyue. In 1919, he donated another 200,000 silver dollars and entrusted local gentry Wang Zuo and renowned modern educator and democratic revolutionary Jing Hengyi, among others, to continue developing it into a full-fledged middle school.

Surviving buildings such as the One-Character Building, Science Hall, Library, and Qu Yuan are all connected by covered walkways. The “Changsong Mountain House” where Jing Hengyi lived, the “Pingwu House” of Xia Mianzun, the “Little Willow House” of Feng Zikai, and the “Late Clear Mountain House” where Master Hongyi resided all retain the refined scholarly ambiance of their time.

From 1921 to 1925, the school’s faculty included Xia Mianzun, Zhu Ziqing, Feng Zikai, Zhu Guangqian, Kuang Husheng, Wang Renshu (Ba Ren), Yang Xianjiang, and Liu Dongyu.
