On the morning of June 18, a middle-aged woman from Shangyu went hiking on Longshan Mountain to get some exercise. Halfway up the mountain, she suddenly fainted due to exhaustion. Fortunately, she was discovered in time and received help, avoiding any serious consequences.
It’s the height of summer, and the morning air is fresh—many citizens enjoy going hiking for exercise. Although hiking is a healthy activity that greatly benefits lung capacity and overall body function, one should pay close attention to their physical condition while hiking. Those who are physically weak should climb slowly, and especially those with cardiovascular or cerebrovascular diseases should avoid climbing too high, as it could easily trigger health issues—making it a case of more harm than good.
Last year, there was a fatal incident related to hiking in Shangyu. A 59-year-old man suddenly collapsed when he reached the summit of Longshan Mountain. Despite being rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment, he unfortunately passed away, a truly regrettable event.
According to a senior doctor with many years of medical experience, hiking is a physically demanding activity, especially during the peak of summer. Due to the heat at night, people often go to bed late, then wake up early the next morning to hike on an empty stomach, which leads to heavy sweating and feelings of fatigue and weakness. People who usually lack exercise and have poor physical condition may even experience palpitations, chest tightness, or even dizziness. If these symptoms occur, one should not force themselves to continue hiking but should rest on the spot; otherwise, it could endanger their health.
The doctor also advised that the most important thing about hiking in the peak of summer is to exercise according to your ability. Before hiking, drink several glasses of water, which can help dilute the blood and reduce dehydration during exercise. While hiking, it’s also important to stay hydrated, preferably with electrolyte-containing sports drinks, which can alleviate fatigue and help restore energy more quickly.
