Fengshan Lingji Scenic Area

The birthplace of Japan’s national religion — the Fengshan Dojo. Historical research shows that Saichō, the founding patriarch of Japanese religious circles, came to China to study Buddhism in the early Tang Dynasty. He eventually received his initiation and teachings on Fengshan Mountain in Shangyu, and later returned to Japan to establish the Tendai sect, Japan’s largest Buddhist denomination. As a result, the Fengshan Dojo has become an important testament to Sino-Japanese cultural exchange and a sacred site for Japanese religious pilgrimages.
