Dongshan Scenic Area is a national AA-level tourist attraction.
Dongshan Scenic Area is located in Shangpu Town, southwestern Shangyu District, Shaoxing City, 13 kilometers from the central area of Shangyu. It is an important part of the Cao’e River Provincial Scenic Area. The site, Dongshan Mountain, has been historically named for its location to the east of the ancient Kuaiji Commandery and is a renowned mountain in the Yue region. It served as a significant stop along the ancient Tang Poetry Trail of eastern Zhejiang, and the idiom “rising again from Dongshan” originates here. Historically, it was a gathering place for numerous literati and scholars, represented by the famous Eastern Jin statesman Xie An and the great calligrapher Wang Xizhi, making it a popular destination for later writers and artists.
On the mountainside by the river in Dongshan, there is a huge rock shaped like a finger, jutting out westward toward the river, hence the name “Dongshan Finger Stone.” It is a famous scenic spot in Dongshan. The area also features numerous attractions such as the Tomb of Xie An, the Tai Fu Ancestral Hall, the General Stone Tablet Forest, and Guoqing Temple. It is a landscape-oriented leisure and sightseeing tourism area that combines vacationing, themed sightseeing, religious pilgrimage, and science education.
