Shangyu Fuzhi Mountain Scenic Area
The Shangyu Fuzhi Mountain Scenic Area is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.
The Fuzhi Mountain Scenic Area is situated in Lingnan Township, Shangyu District, at the junction of Shangyu, Shengzhou, and Yuyao (three cities/districts). Its main peak has an elevation of 861.3 meters, making it the highest peak in Shangyu District. With its picturesque scenery, fresh air, and tranquil environment, it offers ideal spots for spring outings, summer retreats, autumn hikes, and winter barbecues—making it a true "Shangri-La" for city dwellers seeking to reconnect with nature and enjoy pastoral beauty. Fuzhi Mountain gets its name from the Eastern Jin Dynasty poet Xie Lingyun, who, according to legend, “climbed this mountain to drink wine and compose poetry, and after drinking, turned his cup upside down (fuzhi).” The scenic area boasts a rich variety of tourism resources, most notably glacial stone waves, thousand-year-old terraced fields, century-old ancient villages, the highest peak in Shangyu, and a cherry-growing base that is part of the “Four Seasons of Fruits” tour.
The Fuzhi Mountain Scenic Area is home to the highest peak in Shangyu and offers abundant tourism resources, particularly notable for its glacial stone waves, thousand-year-old terraced fields, Dongcheng Ancient Village, and cherry-growing base. In addition, the area features unique rock formations such as Qizhang Rock, Honeycomb Rock, Turtle Rock, and Yellow Rock, as well as numerous natural landscapes including streams, reservoirs, and mountain springs.
Glacial Stone Waves: These are the largest group of stone waves discovered in low-latitude, low-altitude regions in China, constituting a remarkable geomorphological wonder with significant scientific research value (Han Tonglin, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, believes these are remnants of the Quaternary glaciers formed 3 million years ago). The scenic area contains 12 stone waves of varying sizes, including Big Wave, Small Wave, Plum Wave, Black Wave, and Echoing Stone Wave. The “Fuzhi Mountain Climbing the Waves Festival,” centered around the glacial stone waves, has been held for seven consecutive years. Its reputation continues to grow, expanding beyond Shangyu and Shaoxing to reach Taizhou and Hangzhou. It has now become an important component of the “Four Seasons of Fruits Tour”—the Shangyu Ecological Leisure Tourism Festival.
Thousand-Year-Old Terraced Fields: Located on the northern slope of Fuzhi Mountain, these terraced fields cover more than 2,300 acres and consist of over 23,000 plots of varying sizes, all constructed from rocks originating from Quaternary glacial relics known as “stone glaciers.” The “Thousand-Year-Old Terraced Fields” in the Fuzhi Mountain Scenic Area present a breathtaking view as they cascade down the mountainside and layer up from the base, forming a magnificent sight rarely seen in the Jiangnan region.
Subao Ancient Village: Nestled above the mid-mountain section of the Fuzhi Mountain Scenic Area, the village features a harmonious blend of ancient houses, paths, and trees. The locals are warm and hospitable, with a simple and peaceful lifestyle that creates an idyllic, fairy-tale-like atmosphere. The villagers live a leisurely life, working at sunrise and resting at sunset—a scene reminiscent of a “Shangri-La” and the perfect destination for visitors seeking a slow-paced rural experience.
Cherry Growing Base: The cherry growing base in the Fuzhi Mountain Scenic Area has a cultivation history of nearly 200 years, shaped by generations of local farmers. Currently, the base spans more than 1,500 acres, making it a highlight of Fuzhi Mountain and the first fruit of the “Four Seasons of Fruits Tour” in Shangyu. The cherries offer both ornamental and picking value.
Dongcheng Farmstead: Leveraging the unique scenery of the Fuzhi Mountain Scenic Area, the farmstead integrates high-mountain sightseeing, leisure activities, and the “Four Seasons of Fruits” tourism. It grows cherries, waxberries, loquats, and oil tea, and raises chickens, geese, and pigs. The cherry-picking area covers nearly 300 acres, including 15 acres dedicated to the premium “Black Pearl” cherries. When the cherry blossoms bloom, the area becomes a sea of flowers, attracting numerous visitors. Cherry blossom viewing, hiking, exploring the thousand-year-old terraced fields, climbing the glacial stone waves, and enjoying farm-style meals have become popular new destinations for urban travelers.

Lingnan Township: Located at the southernmost tip of Shangyu, Lingnan Township sits at the junction of Shangyu, Shengzhou, and Yuyao. Established in 1992 through the merger of the former Fuzhi Township and Lingnan Township, the township covers an area of 57.4 square kilometers and is a mountainous area rich in ecological beauty and natural resources. It has 61,000 acres of forested land, with a forest coverage rate of 71.4%, earning it the title of “natural oxygen bar.” The 861.3-meter-high Fuzhi Mountain, the highest peak in the city, is located here. Fuzhi Mountain was named after Xie Lingyun, the father of landscape poetry, who “climbed the mountain, drank wine, and turned his cup upside down (fuzhi).” The area is also home to ancient rocks referred to by scholars as the “Three Wonders of Yuezhou…” More details about Lingnan Township++
