China Filial Piety Park
China Filial Piety Park is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.
China Filial Piety Park (formerly known as Cao'e Scenic Area) is situated at the foot of Phoenix Mountain in the southwest of Shangyu urban area. Themed around "filial piety culture" and built based on the stories of Emperor Shun and the filial daughter Cao E, its main attractions include the Temple of Great Shun, Shun Ancestral Hall, Prajna Temple, China Filial Piety Culture Museum, the Statue Group of Shun Plowing, and Traces of Shun Across China. The core area spans 37.5 hectares, with cumulative investment exceeding 350 million yuan. By exploring filial piety culture, Shun culture, Buddhist culture, and folk culture, the park comprehensively showcases the long-standing human history and profound cultural heritage of Shangyu. At the end of 2015, the scenic area successfully passed inspection and became the first national 4A-level tourist attraction in our district.
Centered on "filial culture" and grounded in the ancient sage Emperor Shun, whose filial piety moved Heaven, and Cao E of the Eastern Han Dynasty, who sacrificed herself by jumping into a river to save her father, the park showcases Shangyu’s rich humanistic history through the exploration of Shun culture, filial piety culture, Buddhist culture, and folk culture. It also inherits and promotes the spirit of filial piety that has inspired the Chinese nation for millennia.
Walk through the grand Filial Piety Building, pay homage to the benevolent Emperor Shun in the Temple of Great Shun; ascend the Filial Piety Pavilion for a distant view of the Cao’e River; rest in the Chonghua Pavilion resembling a grain silo, admire Buddhist architecture in Prajna Temple; absorb the essence of Chinese filial values in Traces of Shun Across China and the China Filial Piety Museum, and pause in awe before the magnificent Statue Group of Shun Plowing...
The park was designed under the direction of renowned ancient architecture master Mr. Zhu Guangya. It mainly includes architectural complexes such as the Temple of Great Shun, Shun Ancestral Hall, Prajna Temple, and the China Filial Piety Museum. These structures complement the sculpture group "Elephant Plowing, Bird Weeding" created by art master Han Meilin, embodying the philosophy of "the great form has no shape" and striving for simplicity, solemnity, and grandeur—fully reflecting the filial virtue of Emperor Shun.
