Former Site of the New Fourth Army’s Northern Withdrawal Meeting
The Northern Withdrawal Meeting was a highly significant expanded meeting convened here on September 23, 1945, by the Zhejiang East District Party Committee of the New Fourth Army after the victory in the War of Resistance against Japan. The meeting conveyed instructions from the Central Committee and made specific arrangements for how the district committee, administrative office, and guerrilla columns would carry out the northern withdrawal. Holding the Northern Withdrawal Meeting was a crucial strategic decision made by our Party under the circumstances at that time. It not only exposed the conspiracy of the reactionary Kuomintang, who feigned peace talks while preparing for civil war, but also militarily created conditions for our forces to concentrate superior strength and conduct large-scale operations north of the Yangtze River. The convening of the meeting marked another major turning point accomplished by our Party during the revolutionary war period. The site has witnessed this great event and stands as a monument enshrined in history.
The site is located at No. 23 Qianjia Lane, Fenghui, Shangyu Ancient City, covering an area of over 500 square meters, with an exhibition hall area of 200 square meters. It now largely retains its original appearance.
