Former Residence of Hu Yuzhi
The Former Residence of Hu Yuzhi is a Zhejiang Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
The Former Residence of Hu Yuzhi originated from the Chiyutang Hall, built during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. It is located along Chenghuang River in the ancient town of Fenghui, and is a well-proportioned, grand Jiangnan-style compound with spacious and bright architecture that exudes an impressive aura.
Starting from November 2, 2014, the nearly 300-year-old Chiyutang Hall—the former residence of Hu Yuzhi in the historic town of Fenghui, Shangyu—has been open to the public.
Hu Yuzhi (1896–1986), originally named Xueyu and styled Ziru, was a native of Fenghui Town, Shangyu. He was a renowned political activist, publisher, and news commentator. Born into a scholarly family, his grandfather had served as an imperial censor. His father, Qingzhen, was a local official in the Xianfeng and Tongzhi eras, later becoming a prominent educator. In his childhood, Hu studied diligently under his parents and attended the county’s higher elementary school between the ages of 7 and 14. In the third year of the Xuantong reign (1911), he ranked first in the entrance examination for Shaoxing Prefecture Middle School.
