Nathan was a British Jew who served in the British Army in his youth and later worked continuously in China at the Kaiping Coal Mines and Kailuan Mining Administration. After 1928, he served as Deputy General Manager and then General Manager of the Kailuan Mining Administration. In 1935, he was recalled to the UK.

The building is bordered by Hebei Road to the east, Munan Road to the south, Guilin Road to the west, and Dali Road to the north. Constructed in 1928, it is a brick-and-wood structure covering a land area of 4,362 square meters with a floor space of 1,433 square meters. It is a partially three-story Western-style building featuring red brick exposed walls, a herringbone roof truss, a steeply pitched筒瓦 roof, and an elegant, distinctive layout. The interior is luxuriously and elegantly decorated, with high-grade marble flooring, hardwood trimmings, and includes a dining room, ballroom, study, living room, bedrooms, and more. The spacious yard is planted with various flowers, trees, and plants such as pagoda pines and wisterias. The backyard originally housed a greenhouse and stables. It is a private garden residence in the typical style of a British country cottage.
