In 1898, he became a disciple of the eminent scholar Cen Chunxuan and earned his great esteem. After 1900, he followed Cen to Shaanxi, Sichuan, and the Two Guangs (Guangdong and Guangxi), successively holding positions such as Supervisor of Education for the Two Guangs, Head of Camp Affairs, Guangxi Provincial Financial Commissioner, and Guangxi Governor. In 1910, he was dismissed from office for bribing Prince Qing Yikuang in connection with the Guangzhou Uprising. During the late Qing period, he served as Governor-General of the Two Guangs. In 1916, he was granted the title of First Class Count for supporting Yuan Shikai’s attempt to become emperor. Soon after Yuan Shikai’s downfall, Zhang fled to Tianjin, initially residing in the Italian Concession before moving to this residence in 1928. During his time in Tianjin, he colluded with the ousted warlord and politician Bai Jianwu and established ties with Japanese spies. After the July 7th Incident, he openly collaborated with the enemy. He died in Tianjin not long after Japan’s surrender.
