Zhujiajian is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

Zhujiajian is a national scenic area, located in the southeastern part of the Zhoushan Archipelago in Zhejiang Province. Together with the “Buddhist Kingdom on the Sea,” Putuo Mountain—situated 1.35 nautical miles away—it constitutes the Putuo Mountain National Key Scenic Area. It is also a vital part of the “Putuo Golden Triangle,” the core tourism zone of the Zhoushan Archipelago, and is the fifth largest island in the chain, with an island area of 72 square kilometers. While developing itself into an outstanding scenic destination, the area also emphasizes the construction of tourism culture and has become one of the most vibrant coastal resorts in East China.

One of the “Zhoushan Tourism Golden Triangle,” it is jointly recognized as part of the Putuo Mountain National Key Scenic Area alongside the “Buddhist Kingdom on the Sea,” Putuo Mountain.

In 1997, the Zhujiajian Scenic Area was honored with the “Zhejiang Provincial Scenic Area Outstanding Attractions Construction” award. In 2004, it was named one of the “Top Ten Best Tourist Resorts” in Zhejiang Province by the Zhejiang Provincial Tourism Bureau. It won the 2008 WTF Annual “Best Eco-Destination” Award, became one of the 2008 China (Zhoushan) International Travel Photography Creation Bases, entered the ranks of national AAAA-level tourist attractions in 2009, and topped the list in the “China’s Most Beautiful Coastline” selection event hosted by People's Daily Online Travel Channel in 2009, receiving the highest number of votes.

Overview of Zhujiajian

Zhujiajian is situated between 29°50′–29°57′ north latitude and 122°50′–122°26′ east longitude. It is the fifth largest among the 1,390 islands of the Zhoushan Archipelago.

The island covers an area of 72 square kilometers and is like a brilliant pearl set along the coast of the East China Sea. Backed by the economically developed regions of Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Ningbo, Zhujiajian faces the “Buddhist Kingdom on the Sea,” Putuo Mountain, to the north; the “Eastern Polar Region,” Dongji Island, to the northeast; the Peach Blossom Island from Jin Yong’s novels across the water to the southwest; and to the west lies the Shenjiamen Fishing Port—one of the world’s three largest fishing ports, alongside Norway’s Bergen Harbor and Peru’s Callao Harbor. The Zhujiajian National Scenic Area is located in the southeastern part of the Zhoushan Archipelago in Zhejiang Province. Together with the “Buddhist Kingdom on the Sea,” Putuo Mountain, which lies 1.35 nautical miles away, it forms the Putuo Mountain National Key Scenic Area. It is closely connected to China’s largest fishing port, Shenjiamen, and is an important part of the “Zhoushan Tourism Golden Triangle,” the core tourism zone of the Zhoushan Archipelago.

Zhujiajian boasts stunning and enchanting scenery. The island features continuous golden sands, rippling blue waves, rugged rocks, scattered caves and reefs, shimmering sea light, vast forests, ceaseless sounds of tides, and fresh air. Its beaches form a continuous chain, with steep cliffs, deep caves, and widespread coastal erosional landforms on the southeast coast.

The shoreline is home to numerous competing rocky peaks, diverse stone landscapes, and uniquely exquisite natural formations. The rare Wushi Gravel Beach and the natural wonder of Wutang Tidal Sounds offer a symphony of nature. The sight of fishing boats returning at dusk, phosphorescent waves, and the sunrise over Dongsha showcase ever-changing sceneries. Seagulls gather in flocks, silverfish chase the waves, and the area combines the charm of fishing villages with modern fishery landscapes. With lush green forests, fresh air, no severe summer heat, a pleasant climate, abundant produce, and plentiful aquatic products, the island has now developed four major scenic areas: Baishan, Zhangzhou Bay, Shili Golden Sand, and Daqing Mountain. Lovers’ Island features a collection of coastal erosion wonders, where the sound of waves and winds, birdsong, and floral scents create a romantic island for reconnecting with nature. The Lingzhi Rocks of Baishan showcase the beauty of a thousand competing rocks, resembling a dazzling stone garden on the East China Sea. The shiny black Wushi Pool is uniquely magical. Surrounded by sea on three sides, Daqing Mountain is often veiled in mist, earning it the name “Mountain Intoxicated by Mist.” In ancient times, it was called “Black Sand Hanging Mountain” and was a key defense site against Japanese pirates during the Ming Dynasty.

Zhujiajian is most famous for its beaches. The 6,300-meter-long chain of nine continuous beaches is like a golden necklace nestled between green mountains and blue seas. The “Shili Golden Sand” stretches 6.3 kilometers with an area of 1.44 square kilometers, featuring a beach slope of 2°–5° and shallow waters less than 2 meters deep spanning 3.26 square kilometers, extending along the northeastern to southeastern coasts of the island. This is an ideal location for water sports and could host a beach bathing area capable of accommodating 100,000 visitors at once. It is also perfect for activities such as motorboating, windsurfing, and beach ball games. The flat, broad, and fine sandy beaches of Zhujiajian provide ideal material for sand sculpture. Since 1999, more than ten editions of the China Zhoushan International Sand Sculpture Festival have been successfully held at Nansha Beach in Zhujiajian. Over those three years, the average annual growth rate of visitors to the Zhujiajian Scenic Area reached 14.7%. Shili Golden Sand encompasses the largest group of beaches in East China, including Qingsha, Lisha, Qiansha, Nansha, and Dongsha—nine beaches stretching over 5 kilometers with spectacular views and extremely rich coastal tourism resources.

Transportation

I. Internal Transportation

1. Taxis: The starting fare for taxis in Zhujiajian is 10 RMB, but prices should be negotiated with the driver. Typically, the fare from Shenjiamen to Nansha is 30 RMB (drivers may quote 40–50 RMB, so bargaining is advised); from Zhujiajian Wugongzhi Pier to Nansha, it’s about 20 RMB (sometimes 50 RMB during peak season); from Yadan Mountain Ferry Terminal to Nansha, around 80 RMB. Hiring a taxi to visit the four main scenic spots on Zhujiajian (Nansha, Baishan, Wushi Pool, and Lovers’ Island) costs approximately 80 RMB.

2. Buses: Some buses operate between scenic spots on the island. To reach Wushi Pool, you can take a bus from the Zhujiajian Dadong’ao Bus Station in town. There are also bus connections between Nansha and the town center.

3. Pedicabs: Local pedicabs (three-wheeled motorbikes) are a common way to reach scenic spots. From the Zhujiajian (Dadong’ao) Bus Station in the town center, the fare to Wushi Pool is about 15 RMB, and to Nansha about 30 RMB (a 10-minute ride).

4. Car Rental: Local small car rentals are also available and require price negotiation. Typically, the fare from Nansha to Daqing Mountain is around 100 RMB per car (a 15-minute drive). Vehicles are usually 5-seater sedans or 6–8 passenger vans.

There is no island entry fee for Zhujiajian, but individual attractions require separate tickets.
