Liuhuang Archipelago

The Liuhuang Archipelago is located in Liuhuang Town, Putuo District, Zhoushan City, and consists of 105 islands including Liuhuang Island, Xuanshan Island, and Yanwa Island, resembling a string of pearls scattered across the East China Sea. The total land area of the archipelago is 113.82 square kilometers, making it the third largest island in Zhoushan and also the site of the largest town in the city. It governs 60 administrative villages, 2 neighborhood committees, and has a population of 65,000. In 1993, it was designated as a National Experimental Zone for Comprehensive Development of Island Resources. In 1996, it became a Zhejiang Provincial Experimental Zone for Comprehensive Social Development and a pilot town for comprehensive reform of small towns in China. It exercises certain administrative management functions at the municipal and district levels. Liuhuang is just 6 kilometers across the strait from Beilun in Ningbo, with two car ferries operating regularly in both directions, earning it the nickname “Ningbo’s Maritime Back Garden.” It is also in close proximity—just separated by water—to the Buddhist paradise of Mount Putuo, China’s fishing capital of Shenjiamen, the sand-sculpture destination of Zhujiajian, and the hometown of martial arts legends on Peach Blossom Island, enjoying highly convenient sea and land transportation.

The Liuhuang Archipelago boasts abundant tourism resources. The islands are scattered with unique rock formations and ancient lush trees; the blue skies, white clouds, clear seas, and golden sands make it a place hard to leave. Fresh fish and crabs offer a taste of the leisurely seafood lifestyle. Fishing harbors, fishing villages, and fisherfolk hospitality paint a distinctive island charm. Ancient temples, historic paths, and old battlefields embody the profound maritime culture. Newly launched attractions include: “Longtou Tiao Holiday Beach,” “Xuanshan Island Tongluosha Resort,” and “Taimen Port – Seaside Homes.” Recreational activities have also been developed such as “wild sea fishing,” “eco-friendly bayberry gardens,” and “hand-picking citrus orchards.” Additionally, there are dozens of historical sites including the Wang Anshi Temple, Zhangxiang Water Hermitage, the Taiping Army’s ancient battlefield, Huangjing Temple, Zifu Nunnery, military camp ruins, ancient residences, and pirate caves.
