Former Site of the Beiyang Merchants' Guarantee Bank

The former site of the Beiyang Merchants' Guarantee Bank is a cultural relic protection unit of Tianjin.

The former site of the Beiyang Merchants' Guarantee Bank is located at No. 52, Jiefang North Road, Heping District. It is a cultural relic protection unit of Tianjin and classified as a general-level historical building under municipal protection.

The original building was constructed in 1908 and designed by the Shadeli Engineering Firm. It was once used by a photography studio, the Japanese trading firm Takezai & Co., and the Belgian bank Banque Sino-Belge. In 1908, Tianjin experienced a severe fabric crisis. In 1910, to settle debts owed by local merchants to foreign lenders and maintain commercial relations between Chinese and foreign businesses in the port city, the German von Babo partnered with Chinese businessman Ye Lanfang and others to raise 40 million taels of silver. Together, they founded the Beiyang Merchants' Guarantee Bank, which operated in this building. After its establishment, the bank supported the financial operations of Chinese entrepreneurs and bankers, playing a positive role in sustaining Sino-foreign commerce in Tianjin at the time.

The bank was later reorganized into a regular commercial bank and a new building was constructed on Xijiaomin Lane in Beijing. It ceased operations in 1937.

Later, due to road adjustments, the original building was demolished. In 1927, the current structure was built to designs by the Tianjin Universal Engineering Company. The building is a two-story brick-and-wood structure with a flat-tiled pitched roof. Its exterior features stucco walls, pilasters, small arched windows, and a design that is simple yet refined.

The building is set at an angle to the street corner, with its main entrance positioned at the corner. The distinctive feature of the structure is the angular parapet wall with a stepped silhouette at the top of the corner.

The Merchants' Guarantee Bank helped protect the interests of some Chinese merchants engaged in foreign trade and played a positive role in Sino-foreign commerce in Tianjin at the time.
