Attraction Introduction

Miaozihu Island is the main island of Dongji Island. It has relatively better tourism facilities and is the only island in the Dongji archipelago that can be reached directly by boat, making it the first stop for most travelers visiting Dongji. If you want to experience a more authentic island vibe, you can transfer here to Dongfushan Island and then stop by Miaozihu on your way back.

The easiest way to explore Miaozihu Island is to take a sightseeing bus near the dock for a loop around the island, costing 50 RMB per person and taking about 30 minutes. The roads on the island aren’t complicated, nor as rugged as those on Dongfushan Island. If you prefer to walk around the island, you can start along the coastal concrete road west of Shima Dock, head toward the military base in the mountains, loop around to the Caibo Gong statue at the easternmost point, and then return the same way. This route will take you to most of the island’s main attractions and takes about four to five hours in total.

There are some interesting spots on the island that you might want to check out. Fishermen’s paintings are a local specialty—right after arriving on the island, you’ll see a wall covered in them. Next to the Dongji History and Culture Museum, there’s also a fishermen’s painting exhibition hall worth visiting. The large rock near the dock engraved with the words “Dongji” is a popular photo spot for visitors and a must-visit. Around the military base in the mountains, you’ll find attractions such as the East China Sea’s First Outpost and the “Soldiers’ Second Hometown” stone carvings, which offer a glimpse into the hardships and sense of duty of the stationed soldiers. Notably, Miaozihu Island has a post office where you can buy postcards and send them from China’s easternmost point to family and friends—a meaningful activity.

Additionally, this was the main filming location for director Han Han’s movie "The Continent." With the film’s popularity, the island has recently added several movie-related attractions, such as the Caibo Gong statue, the “Golden Fur Back,” the “First Curve,” and the "The Continent" film set. Fans of the movie may enjoy exploring these sites.

Watching the sunrise on Miaozihu Island isn’t as ideal as on Dongfushan Island—the best viewpoint is Dongji Pavilion. Walk uphill along the slope of the Fishermen’s Commercial Street, pass the Dongji History Museum, and reach the hillside. On the right side of the path is a signal transmission tower, and on the left is Dongji Pavilion. At night, Miaozihu Island is more charming than during the day. The streets are livelier—you can stroll around, and there are shops along the coastal street selling seafood and small trinkets at reasonable prices, perfect for souvenirs. Near Shima Dock, the seafood street stalls offer an enjoyable seaside dining experience (though prices are higher).

There are relatively more accommodation options on the island, and most offer sea views. For budget-friendly stays, you can choose basic fisherman’s homes that include meals; if you have a larger budget, consider higher-end options like Dongfu Grand Hotel. Also, accommodation is more expensive on weekends, and tickets and lodging are often in high demand during peak seasons and weekends, so remember to book in advance.

Special Tips

1. Boat tickets from Shenjiamen to Dongji are sold under a real-name system. Travelers need to show their ID when purchasing tickets and boarding.

2. Due to changeable sea weather, boats to and from the island may be delayed or cancelled at any time. Be sure to check the weather forecast before departure.

3. The boat ride to and from Miaozihu Island takes quite a while, so it’s advisable to bring some motion sickness medication. It’s recommended to book a cabin ticket for a smoother ride, or you can sit on the deck to enjoy the scenery.

4. There are many mosquitoes on the island, and they can be aggressive. The island also has strong UV rays and significant temperature differences between day and night, so take measures against mosquitoes, sunburn, and colds.

5. Since supplies on the island are transported from the mainland, food prices are higher—for example, vegetables cost around 20 RMB per dish. This isn’t price gouging.
