Baotuo Lecture Temple Scenic Area is a cultural tourism attraction.

Baotuo Lecture Temple is located opposite the Ten Thousand Buddhas Pagoda, near the lower station of the Foding Mountain Cable Car. It is a recently built temple on Mount Putuo in recent years. Due to its similar scale to Puji Temple, it is often referred to as the fourth largest temple on Mount Putuo. The most immediate impression this newly built temple gives is its grandeur and magnificence. The entire temple is built along the mountainside, featuring architecture modeled after the Qing Dynasty royal style paired with marble steps—majestic yet not overly ostentatious. Getting to Baotuo Lecture Temple is very convenient; take the island’s bus to the cable car station, then walk a short distance to reach it.

The central axis main structures of Baotuo Lecture Temple, such as the Bell and Drum Towers, the Heavenly King Hall, the Grand Yuantong Hall, the Grand Lecture Hall, and the Grand Treasure Hall, adopt the architectural style of northern Ming and Qing dynasties palaces—strict yet exuding an inviolable sense of majesty. The east and west side buildings, such as the Abbot’s Courtyard, storage rooms, and monks’ quarters, feature southern traditional Chinese architectural styles, adding a touch of warmth and elegance to this sacred place. The biggest highlights of the temple include the Yuan Dun Ordination Platform in the northwest, the largest ordination platform in southern China, and the Baotuo Grotto Buddha statues, modeled after the Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang, which are exquisitely crafted. From the higher points in the temple, you can enjoy a spectacular view.

Although it was completed not long ago, Baotuo Lecture Temple has already become a popular site for incense offerings. Visitors often include it as a stop on their Foding Mountain journey. After visiting Baotuo Lecture Temple, you can take the cable car up to Foding Mountain, explore Huìjì Temple at the summit, and then descend along the Xiangyun Path. Fǎyǔ Temple is not far from the foot of the mountain.

No separate ticket required. It is included in the Mount Putuo Scenic Area ticket. Mount Putuo Scenic Area Ticket: Off-season (December – January) 140 RMB, Peak season (February – November) 160 RMB, Spring Festival, Labor Day, and National Day holidays 200 RMB.

There are two dedicated shuttle bus lines that connect major attractions on Mount Putuo.

Line 1: Puji Temple East (Baibu Sha) – Baibu Ge – Zhuzhulin (Nanhai Guanyin Open-Air Statue) – Rusan Di (Nantian Men) – Ferry Terminal – Haifang Xincun (Xishan Xincun Zone 1) – Seafood Park (Xishan Xincun Zone 2) – Baotuo Hotel – Puji Temple West (Xishan Scenic Area Entrance)

Line 2: Ferry Terminal – Rusan Di (Nantian Men) – Zhuzhulin (Nanhai Guanyin Open-Air Statue) – Baibu Ge – Puji Temple East (Baibu Sha) – Xiānrén Jǐng (Zhāoyáng Dòng) – Dàchéng Ān – Fǎyǔ Temple (Qiānbù Shā) – Fēishā Ào – Xiánghuì Ān – Fànyīn Dòng – Bǎoyuè Ān – Gǔfó Dòng – Cable Car Station

In addition to the two dedicated shuttle bus lines, point-to-point shuttle buses also operate between major scenic areas on Mount Putuo, with vehicles dispatched according to passenger flow via walkie-talkies by dedicated personnel.

How to Get to Baotuo Lecture Temple Scenic Area

Take the scenic area Bus Line 2 from the Mount Putuo ferry terminal and get off at the final stop, “Cable Car Station.”
