Introduction

Nansha is a well-known beach in the Zhujiajian Scenic Area. Unlike typical beaches, Nansha not only boasts high-quality sands but also features a variety of fascinating sand sculptures along the shore. Visitors interested can even try their hand at creating their own sand art.

Entering the scenic area from the Nansha Park entrance, on the left is the International Sand Sculpture Art Plaza. Usually, this area is just a pile of ordinary sand, but every September, it hosts the China Zhoushan International Sand Sculpture Festival, where artists transform the sand into stunning artworks. From September to July of the following year is the sand sculpture exhibition period, making it the liveliest and most worthwhile time to visit Nansha. If you visit outside of these months, there are still some sand sculptures to see—myths, buildings, and more—but they are smaller in scale and some may be damaged. In the Sand Sculpture Culture Hall within the scenic area, you can try making your own sand sculpture (for an additional fee) and also purchase small sand sculpture models as souvenirs.

Aside from viewing sand sculptures, Nansha’s fine sandy beach attracts many visitors, especially during summer holidays when it gets as crowded as a pot of boiling dumplings. Despite the crowds, the beach facilities are quite complete, offering paid activities such as beach buggies and beach volleyball. There are also locker services (10–20 RMB) and shower facilities (cold water is free, hot water costs 20 RMB).

After wading in the sea and playing in the sand, you can dine at nearby seafood stalls, although the prices are on the higher side—the lively atmosphere is still enjoyable. It’s recommended to stay at a nearby farmhouse and book meals with the owner in advance; the food is not only fresher and more affordable but also convenient after a swim. Adjacent to Nansha is Dongsha, an undeveloped beach that is much less crowded, free of charge, and more natural. For a quieter experience, consider visiting this area.

Special Tips

1. During peak season, night tickets (20 RMB) are available after 18:00. Visitors under 70 years old and children over 1.2 meters tall must purchase full-price tickets.

2. Along the way to Nansha, there are many private guesthouses and shops selling various beach gear such as swimsuits, swim trunks, sand toys for kids, flip-flops, and inflatable rings. If you haven’t brought these items, it’s advisable to buy them en route, as prices inside the scenic area are much higher.
