Attraction Introduction

The Tide Sound Cave is situated within the Purple Bamboo Forest Scenic Area, opposite the Keguqi Guanyin Temple. Similar to the Fanyin Cave on the eastern side of Mount Putuo, the Tide Sound Cave is also a sight best appreciated through sound. In contrast, the Tide Sound Cave is much lower in height, even partially hidden among the rocky outcrops and not easily noticeable, but its deep, winding interior surpasses that of the Fanyin Cave.

From the Purple Bamboo Forest parking lot, head south, turn left towards the direction of the Purple Bamboo Forest Chan Temple, and you will reach the Tide Sound Cave after about 200 meters. Half-submerged in the sea, the cave is approximately 10 meters deep. The three characters “Tide Sound Cave” at the entrance were handwritten by Emperor Kangxi. Visitors can walk down the steps above the cave to listen to the sound of waves crashing against the cliffs— you’ll feel the roaring of the surf, as if even the ground beneath your feet is trembling. Observing the tides from the Tide Sound Cave and gazing out from the railing at the vast sea where water meets sky brings a feeling of sudden openness.

It is said to be a place where the Goddess of Mercy (Guanyin) once made a miraculous appearance, and the Keguqi Guanyin Temple is the first Buddhist temple on Mount Putuo, which adds an extra layer of mystique to the Tide Sound Cave. In the hearts of many devotees, the tide sound is not only the noise of the sea but also the voice of the bodhisattva. As a result, many people still come here to make wishes or give thanks, and it is believed to be particularly efficacious.

There are two dedicated shuttle bus lines connecting most major attractions on Mount Putuo

Line 1: Eastern side of Puji Temple (Baibu Sha) – Baibuge – Purple Bamboo Forest (Guanyin of the South Sea Open-Air Statue) – Enter Sanmodi (Nantianmen Gate) – Ferry Terminal – Haifang Xincun (Xishan Xincun Zone 1) – Seafood Park (Xishan Xincun Zone 2) – Baotuo Restaurant – Western side of Puji Temple (Xishan Scenic Area Entrance)

Line 2: Ferry Terminal – Enter Sanmodi (Nantianmen Gate) – Purple Bamboo Forest (Guanyin of the South Sea Open-Air Statue) – Baibuge – Eastern side of Puji Temple (Baibu Sha) – Immortal’s Well (Chaoyang Cave) – Dacheng’an – Fayu Temple (Qianbusha Beach) – Feisha’ao – Xianghui’an – Fanyin Cave – Baoyue’an – Ancient Buddha Cave – Cable Car Station
