China Buddhist Academy Putuo Mountain Campus

The China Buddhist Academy Putuo Mountain Campus is sponsored by the Buddhist Association of China and jointly organized by the China Buddhist Academy, the Zhejiang Buddhist Association, and the Putuo Mountain Buddhist Association, with the latter being the primary organizer. It is a prestigious Chinese-language advanced Buddhist institution in China.

The campus is situated in Zhujiajian, Putuo District, Zhoushan City, Zhejiang Province, facing the "Buddhist Kingdom by the Sea," Putuo Mountain, across the water, covering a total area of approximately 300 acres. Its buildings feature a Tang Dynasty architectural style, nestled against mountains and beside water, with an exquisitely designed and grand layout. The educational facilities are among the best in religious institutions both in China and abroad.

The predecessor of the academy was the Putuo Mountain Buddhist College, established in 1988. In 2011, it was upgraded to the China Buddhist Academy Putuo Mountain Campus. Currently, the academy has a comprehensive disciplinary structure, complete teaching, research, and monastic practice conditions. Its Academic Committee ensures the smooth progress of teaching and research work. The Putuo Mountain Teaching, Research and Practice Base of East China Normal University has enhanced the academy’s academic foundation. The successful collaborative postgraduate program with the Pali and Buddhist Studies Institute of the University of Kelaniya in Sri Lanka, as well as the effective joint education system with East China Normal University, serve as models for the future development of the Buddhist Academy. Additionally, the Putuo Mountain Teaching, Research and Practice Base of East China Normal University, the International Guanyin Culture Research Center, the Baishan Book House, the “Puji” Newspaper, the “Putuo Journal,” and the Haichao Yin Buddhist Chanting Art Troupe provide platforms for academic study and interest development for monastic students. The campus library is well-established with a wide range of collections, currently housing over 80,000 volumes to meet the borrowing and research needs of faculty and students. Practices such as chanting precepts, meditation, attending ceremonies, and communal meals help uphold the spiritual discipline of the academy. Refining its distinctive educational features, emphasizing temple management and Guanyin culture studies, and building high-quality, efficient classrooms are the guiding principles and goals of the academy.

The academy offers multiple levels of education, including a preparatory course (for male monastics), undergraduate programs (for both male and female monastics), and graduate programs (for both male and female monastics). Among these, the male preparatory course and male undergraduate program have conducted regular annual enrollment since 2016.
