The Hoiyin Pool inside the Ming Dynasty-era Puji Temple is filled with spring water from the mountain, crystal-clear as jade. The pool is dotted with lush lotus leaves and elegant lotus flowers, creating a charming scene. On summer evenings, when the bright moon reflects on the water and the fragrance of the lotuses fills the air, it’s the perfect time to enjoy the “Moonlit Lotus Pool.” “Moonlit Lotus Pool” refers to the nighttime view of Hoiyin Pool. Located in front of Puji Temple, Hoiyin Pool is also known as the “Release Pond” or “Lotus Pond.” Originally, it was a pond where Buddhist devotees released animals as an act of compassion. Later, lotus flowers were planted here, hence the name “Lotus Pond.” “Haiyin” (海印), meaning “seal of the sea,” is the name of a type of samadhi (meditative absorption) attained by the Buddha. Just as the ocean can reflect all things, the Buddha’s wisdom can reflect all phenomena.

Ticket information:

No separate ticket required. It is included in the Puji Temple entrance fee of 5 RMB. Additionally, the Mount Putuo Scenic Area ticket is 140 RMB in the low season (December–January), 160 RMB in the high season (February–November), and 200 RMB during Spring Festival, Labor Day, and National Day.

Transportation

There are two dedicated tourist bus lines connecting most major attractions on Mount Putuo.

Line 1: Puji Temple East (Baibu Sha) – Baibu Pavilion – Zhuzhulin (Outdoor Statue of Guanyin) – Rusan Midu (Nantian Gate) – Ferry Terminal – Haifang Xincun (Xishan Xincun Zone 1) – Seafood Garden (Xishan Xincun Zone 2) – Baotuo Hotel – Puji Temple West (Xishan Scenic Area Entrance)

Line 2: Ferry Terminal – Rusan Midu (Nantian Gate) – Zhuzhulin (Outdoor Statue of Guanyin) – Baibu Pavilion – Puji Temple East (Baibu Sha) – Xianren Well (Chaoyang Cave) – Dacheng An – Fayu Temple (Qianbusha) – Feisha’ao – Xianghui An – Fanyin Cave – Bao Yue An – Ancient Buddha Cave – Cable Car Station

In addition to the two dedicated tourist bus lines, point-to-point shuttle buses are available between major scenic spots on Mount Putuo, with staff dispatching vehicles by walkie-talkie based on passenger flow.

How to get to Puji Temple

Take Tourist Bus Line 1 to Baibu Sha (Puji Temple East), or Line 2 to Baibu Sha (Puji Temple)—the temple is right there.
