Former Residence of Chen Yihou

The former residence of Chen Yihou is a protected cultural heritage site of Tianjin Municipality.

The former residence of Chen Yihou is located at No. 93 Xi’an Road. It was designed by the renowned architect Shen Liyuan and funded by the banker Chen Yihou. The building includes a basement and consists of three courtyards: the front courtyard features a garage, a billiard room, and more; the middle courtyard is a garden; and the rear courtyard is used for drying clothes, among other purposes. The residence enjoys excellent ventilation and remains warm in winter and cool in summer.

Chen Yihou (1886–1970), from Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province, was a late-Qing Dynasty imperial scholar. He studied diplomacy at the Translation School of the Qing government and later taught English at the Hunan Normal School after graduation. In 1912, he began working at the Shanghai branch of Zhejiang Industrial Bank. In 1927, he was invited by Wu Dingchang, general manager of Yien Yieh Commercial Bank, to serve as an assistant manager at the bank’s Beijing branch. In 1929, he was transferred to the Tianjin branch of Yien Yieh Commercial Bank, and in 1933, he became the manager of that branch, while also serving as a board member of the Kailuan Mining Administration and Hengyuan Cotton Mill.
