Former Residence of Chen Zhuling

The former residence of Chen Zhuling is a protected cultural heritage site of Tianjin Municipality.

The former residence of Chen Zhuling is located at No. 4 Baoding Road, Heping District, Tianjin, dating back to the Republic of China period.

The former residence of Chen Zhuling is a three-story mixed-structure building, with parts two stories high, featuring a red-tiled sloping roof. The exterior walls are finished with plain red bricks, and the window and door openings are in the form of arches, adorned with exquisite floral decorations and window/door surrounds. The building has an "L"-shaped floor plan, with an elegant and graceful appearance, staggered volumes, strong contrast between solid and void elements, and a relatively spacious courtyard. It exhibits characteristics of eclectic architectural style.

On January 5, 2013, it was designated as part of the fourth batch of Protected Cultural Heritage Sites of Tianjin Municipality by the Tianjin Municipal People's Government.

Chen Zhuling (1870–1929) was a native of Gaoyao, Guangdong. He graduated early from the Tianjin Chinese-Western School. In 1880, he moved north to Tianjin with his brother-in-law. In 1909, he was appointed as the comprador of the export department of Jardine Matheson & Co. in Tianjin. Chen Zhuling invested in the construction of Yaohuali and personally funded the development of a large number of properties, later establishing the Yide Foreign Firm. He was kidnapped and killed in 1929.
