Yuantong Chan Forest

Yuantong Chan Temple is the main temple on Mount Luojia, situated on a flat area at the mountain’s summit. The temple was built during the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty and was originally just a small Yuantong Nunnery. Although it still cannot be considered a large temple today, it bustles with visitors and is filled with flourishing incense, exuding the charm of an ancient monastery. Though its exterior may not be striking, the interior of the main hall is adorned with carved beams and painted rafters, resplendent in gold and brilliance. The hall enshrines a 3.3-meter-tall gilded sandalwood Guanyin seated statue, with the Goddess holding a pure water vase, her compassionate gaze radiating serenity. Beside her are sculpted representations of the Thirty-Two Manifestations of Guanyin. The East Grand Hall is the Water Guanyin Hall, housing the largest reclining Guanyin statue on Mount Putuo. The stone-carved relief corridor walls depict scenes from the Universal Gate Chapter of the Lotus Sutra, vividly illustrating the touching moments of Guanyin saving all beings, inspiring devotion. At the rear of the temple lies an ancient stone-dug Dragon Spring Well, its mouth carved in the shape of a dragon head, with spring water flowing from the dragon’s mouth. Not far from the temple is a “Fairy Bridge,” which is actually a long natural stone slab suspended between two ravines.
