Mount Putuo Meifu Nunnery

Walk up from the West Heavenly Gate and pass through a section of stone-paved pathways to reach Meifu Nunnery. This nunnery was built in honor of Mei Fu, a native of Shouchun during the Western Han Dynasty, who once served as the magistrate of Nanchang but later resigned from office to travel across the country. In his later years, he came to Mount Putuo, where he lived in a cave practicing alchemy until he passed away inside it. To commemorate him, the local villagers named the cave hill “Mei” (plum) and built this Meifu Nunnery. Though not large in size, the nunnery features a magnificently decorated main hall. The Lingyou Cave located at the back of the eastern side of the main hall was the very cave where Mei Fu practiced alchemy. The spring water in the cave is crystal clear and rich in various minerals, hence known as “immortal water.” Visitors often stop here to take a refreshing sip.

There are two dedicated bus lines connecting most major scenic spots on Mount Putuo

Line 1: Putuo Temple East (Baibu Sha) – Baibu Pavilion – Purple Bamboo Forest (Guanyin of the South Sea Statue) – Sanmodi Entrance (Nantian Gate) – Ferry Terminal – Haifang Xincun (Xishan Xincun Zone 1) – Seafood Park (Xishan Xincun Zone 2) – Baotuo Restaurant – Putuo Temple West (West Mountain Scenic Area Entrance)

Line 2: Ferry Terminal – Sanmodi Entrance (Nantian Gate) – Purple Bamboo Forest (Guanyin of the South Sea Statue) – Baibu Pavilion – Putuo Temple East (Baibu Sha) – Immortal Well (Chaoyang Cave) – Dacheng Nunnery – Fayu Temple (Qianbu Sha) – Feisha’ao – Xianghui Nunnery – Fanyin Cave – Baoyue Nunnery – Ancient Buddha Cave – Cable Car Station

In addition to the two dedicated tourist bus lines, there are also point-to-point tourist buses operating between the major scenic areas of Mount Putuo. Vehicle dispatching is managed by staff using walkie-talkies based on passenger flow.

How to Get to Meifu Nunnery

Take Bus Line 1 or Line 2 of the scenic area bus and get off at Qiansi (Baibu Sha), then walk for a few minutes to reach the nunnery.
