Putuo Mountain Shuangquan Chan Temple (Shuangquan Chan Monastery)

Shuangquan Chan Temple is located on the northeast foothills of Xiangwang Peak on Putuo Mountain, to the west of Qianbusha Beach. It was built during the Ming Dynasty's Wanli era by the monk Zhenjing. In the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, its 14th-generation descendant Guangxin renovated it. During the Guangxu era, the monk Yuanzong restored it again. In the 12th year of the Republic of China (1923), the monk Guangyin expanded it. The temple covers a construction area of 2,759.27 square meters and consists of 73 halls.

Legend has it that shortly after the monastery was completed and consecrated, during a ceremony for the Avatamsaka Sutra, pilgrims from all directions came to worship. Due to the large number of people, there was a shortage of water. The monks prayed earnestly, and before long, two springs gushed out from beneath the rocks beside the hall. The spring water was of high quality, cool, and sweet, which amazed everyone. They attributed this miracle to the spiritual power of Guanyin Bodhisattva, hence the monastery was named “Shuangquan An” (Twin Springs Hermitage).
