Putuo Mountain Buddhist Museum

The Putuo Mountain Buddhist Museum is the first religious museum in China established independently by the religious community to date. It originated as an exhibition room for cultural relics located at Puji Temple. It is a specialized museum primarily dedicated to the collection, preservation, display, and research of Buddhist relics on Putuo Mountain.

The Buddhist Museum is located on the former site of Tanhua An at No. 36-6 Xianghua Street, Putuo Mountain. It neighbors the national cultural heritage site of the Yuan Dynasty’s Duobao Pagoda, the provincial-level cultural heritage site of Puji Temple, and the municipal-level cultural heritage site of Baizi Hall. The building features a Song Dynasty-style exterior, with a construction area of 3,643 square meters, a land area of 3,400 square meters, and a total height of 19.68 meters. It consists of two floors and seven exhibition halls, housing over 1,700 Buddhist relics, including sacred Buddhist artifacts, imperial edicts, imperial-bestowed kasayas, calligraphy and paintings, ceramics, bronze Buddha statues, and jade miscellaneous items. Among these, there are five first-class national cultural relics, 22 second-class relics, and 349 third-class relics.

Transportation on Putuo Mountain

There are two dedicated bus lines connecting most of the major attractions on Putuo Mountain.

Line 1: East of Puji Temple (Baibu Sha) – Baibu Pavilion – Zhuzhulin (Guanyin of the South Sea Open-Air Statue) – Enter Sanmodi (Nantianmen) – Ferry Terminal – Haifang Xincun (Xishan Xincun Area 1) – Seafood Garden (Xishan Xincun Area 2) – Baotuo Restaurant – West of Puji Temple (West Mountain Scenic Area Entrance)

Line 2: Ferry Terminal – Enter Sanmodi (Nantianmen) – Zhuzhulin (Guanyin of the South Sea Open-Air Statue) – Baibu Pavilion – East of Puji Temple (Baibu Sha) – Immortal Well (Chaoyang Cave) – Dacheng An – Fayu Temple (Qianbu Sha) – Feisha’ao – Xianghui An – Fan Yin Cave – Baoyue An – Ancient Buddha Cave – Cable Car Station

In addition to the two dedicated tourist bus lines, point-to-point tourist buses also operate between the main scenic spots on Putuo Mountain. Staff dispatch vehicles via walkie-talkies based on passenger flow.
