Putuo Mountain Shore Archway

Built in 1919. It features four pillars and three gates, with green-tiled and upturned eaves. Five plaques are displayed on top, inscribed with “Sacred Realm of the South Sea,” “Crossing to the Other Shore Together,” “Boat of Treasure Dispelling the Ford,” “Golden Rope Leading to Enlightenment,” and “Repentance Leads to Salvation.” These were written by figures from the Beiyang Government, including Li Yuanhong, Xu Shichang, and Feng Guozhang.

The gate pillars are engraved with couplets: “Where there is feeling, there is connection; where there is water, there is moonlight reflected in a thousand rivers; where there is no contrivance, there is no obstruction; where there are no clouds, there is a boundless sky,” “Sacred traces mark Mount Kailash, nurturing all living beings across nations; Buddhist radiance shines over the sea isle, calming the tides for a thousand years,” “Tides come twice a day—listen as they come and go freely; countless rocks weigh heavy—do not mock them as senseless or unaware,” “Those who come to this mountain, if not yet paying homage at the Universal Gate, should first purify their intentions; those who cross the sea to reach the other shore must turn back early.”
