The Gou Mountain Revolutionary Martyrs Monument serves as a patriotic education base.

Goushan Subdistrict is located in the southeastern part of Zhoushan Main Island, bordering Lincheng, the new administrative district of Zhoushan, to the west, and adjacent to Donggang Subdistrict and Shenjiamen Subdistrict to the southeast, as well as Zhanmao Subdistrict to the north. The subdistrict covers a land area of 44.1 square kilometers, comprising 20 administrative villages, 6 rural communities, and 1 urban community, with a total population of approximately 32,000.

In the second half of 2005, the Goushan Subdistrict Party Working Committee and the Subdistrict Office conducted special research and decided to construct the Gou Mountain Revolutionary Martyrs Monument, relocate and rebuild the Revolutionary Martyrs Historical Exhibition Hall, and include the project as one of the government’s practical initiatives. The subdistrict commissioned the Zhejiang Institute of Architectural Design to create a specialized design for the monument and organized multiple discussions on the construction plan for the exhibition hall. Eventually, they selected a 2.4-acre plot of mountain land in Guanqiantou Village for the project.

In January 2006, construction of the Gou Mountain Martyrs Monument began. After six months of effort and overcoming various construction challenges, the project was officially completed in mid-July. It now consists of three main structures: the Gou Mountain Revolutionary Martyrs Monument, the Revolutionary Martyrs Historical Exhibition Hall, and a leisure square. The design integrates patriotism with tourism and leisure. Covering an area of 1,000 square meters with an investment of 700,000 yuan, the monument stands 11.8 meters tall, and the exhibition hall has a floor area of 100 square meters. The exhibition hall displays the deeds and photographic materials of 23 martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the War of Resistance against Japan and the Liberation War. To comprehensively, accurately, and vividly showcase the glorious history of the martyrs, the subdistrict dispatched dedicated teams five times to places such as Gaoyou City in Jiangsu Province to collect precious materials and images related to the martyrs. At the same time, efforts were intensified to address issues such as the large number of martyrs listed, the wide time span, and unclear written records, ensuring the authentic documentation of the martyrs' heroic and illustrious history. During the unveiling ceremony of the monument, a special trip was made to Gaoyou City in Jiangsu Province to invite the family of Martyr Zhoushan and guests from Zhoushan Township to attend. Notably, Gao Shan, the daughter of Goushan-native martyr Zhoushan, delivered a speech at the ceremony, inspiring young people to remember history and strive for progress.

The Gou Mountain Revolutionary Martyrs Monument, the Revolutionary Martyrs Historical Exhibition Hall, and the leisure square have become excellent venues for enhancing patriotic education as well as for tourism and leisure. Upon application by the subdistrict to the Putuo District Spiritual Civilization Construction Committee, the site was designated as a district-level patriotic education base on November 7, 2006. Later, after applying to the Municipal Spiritual Civilization Committee, it was successfully recognized as a municipal-level patriotic education base in November 2007. Each year, the base serves as a venue for primary and secondary school students to honor the martyrs, cultivate ideals, and explore the “meaning of life,” functioning as a second classroom. The base makes full use of important holidays and memorial days to carry out concentrated educational and publicity activities on the ideological and moral development of minors. The base also engages in joint activities with local police stations, schools, stationed military units, and enterprises, establishing an educational liaison system. It also serves as a fixed venue for schools and enterprises to hold ceremonies for joining the Party, the Communist Youth League, and coming-of-age pledges. Relying on the base, patriotic education and publicity extend to all levels and fields. The Gou Mountain Revolutionary Martyrs Monument has also become a place for the public to engage in fitness and recreation. Every morning and evening, many locals visit the Revolutionary Martyrs Monument Leisure Square to participate in beneficial activities such as group dancing, Tai Chi, and more.
