Putuo Museum

Putuo Museum serves as a patriotic education base.

Established in October 2002, Putuo Museum is located at No. 40 Miaojiatang Road, Shenjiamen. It covers a land area of 550 square meters, with a building area of 365 square meters, including an exhibition area of 330 square meters. The museum building, which is over 60 years old, features Qing Dynasty architectural style and was formerly a site for fishery trade. In 2001, with strong support and high attention from the leadership of the Putuo District Government, 2.5 million yuan was invested in its protective restoration.

The "Fishing Port Culture Exhibition" at Putuo Museum centers around Shenjiamen Fishing Port, showcasing the regional culture and fishing port charm of Putuo from three aspects: fishing, the port, and scenery. It currently displays a total of 451 exhibits, divided into two sections — "The Maritime History of Putuo" and "Fishing Port Shenjiamen" — featuring five major series: Seaside Life, Historical Traces of the Fishing Port, Bustling Fishing Port, Port Connecting the World, and Great Changes. The exhibits include artifacts, models, photos, sculptures, and more, vividly reflecting the daily life and work customs of fishing families, the evolution of fishing tools, the history of the fishing port’s formation, the development of the fish market, changes in the fishing harbor, foreign exchanges, and more. The exhibition offers a comprehensive showcase of the fishing port culture of Putuo, with strong visual and educational value. Since its opening, the museum has been recognized as both a district-level and municipal-level patriotic education base. It has become an important venue for local youth to learn about the regional culture of Putuo, receive revolutionary tradition education, and engage in patriotic education. The museum has established joint education programs with schools, neighborhoods, and communities. Agreements have been signed with Shenjiamen Subdistrict and Donggang Subdistrict to establish “Happy Growth Clubs for Minors.” Patriotic education partnerships have also been formed with schools such as Shenjiamen No. 1 Junior High, Shen No. 1 Primary School, and Shen No. 2 Primary School. Additionally, it serves as a social practice education base for Shen No. 4 Primary School. Since its opening on October 16, 2002, the museum has welcomed over 40,000 visitors, including leaders from central, provincial, and municipal governments, as well as international guests from the United States, Norway, Spain, South Korea, and other countries, all of whom have given it high praise and recognition.

Shenjiamen Fishing Port is the central fishing harbor of the East China Sea fishing grounds and the largest fishing port in China. Alongside Bergen Port in Norway and Callao Port in Peru, it is recognized as one of the world’s three most renowned fishing ports. Based on the actual conditions and cultural characteristics of Putuo, the museum focuses on the realities of Putuo’s island life and faces the ocean, condensing many facets of maritime culture. It comprehensively reflects the port culture, fishing culture, fishing vessel culture, and territorial culture of the nation’s largest fishing port. The exhibition provides audiences with an intuitive introduction to the development of Putuo’s fisheries and the tremendous changes and ups and downs of Shenjiamen Fishing Port before and after liberation. The section "The Maritime History of Putuo" uses artifacts, texts, models, and photos to depict various aspects — such as the scene of Shenjiamen Fishing Port in the 1940s, marine fishery resources, shallow-water and tidal flat fishing, sailing boat near-shore fishing, motorized fishing boat operations, offshore fishery development, shallow-water aquaculture, aquatic product processing and trade, the lives of fishermen in the past, new trends among fishing community members, the lights of fishing villages, and the pioneering of the century’s fisheries — vividly presenting the rise and fall, development prospects, and future of Putuo’s fisheries.

In the "Fishing Port Shenjiamen" section, two models showing the old and new districts of Shenjiamen, along with photos of the fishing port’s transformation in the 1950s and 1970s, take visitors on a journey through historical memory and inspire aspirations for a bright and beautiful present and future. The concluding section presents a large, striking image of Shenjiamen Fishing Port in the 21st century, introducing this world-famous fishing harbor to audiences. This section also includes portrayals of the fishing port by historically significant cultural figures, as well as valuable historical materials about notable individuals from various dynasties who visited Putuo, contributed to its development, and made outstanding contributions to the region.

The overall exhibition combines aesthetics with education, intuition with artistry, dynamism with stillness, and imagery with representation. It aims to help visitors understand Putuo, gain knowledge of the ocean, and deepen their awareness of the significance of "developing the ocean and revitalizing Zhoushan."
