Monument to Revolutionary Martyrs on Qinglong Mountain

The Monument to Revolutionary Martyrs on Qinglong Mountain is situated atop Qinglong Mountain in Shenjiamen Subdistrict of our district, covering an area of over 660 square meters. Adjacent to Donggang District and facing the thriving Shenjiamen Fishing Port, it is enveloped by verdant pines, creating a beautiful setting. The monument was built to commemorate the revolutionary martyrs who bravely lost their lives in the Battle of Dengbu Island, to celebrate their heroic deeds, and to educate the general public. On the evening of November 3, 1949, the 61st Division of the 20th Army of the People’s Liberation Army, in coordination with the 22nd Army, crossed the sea from the southern route of Zhoushan to liberate the islands of Fodu, Liuheng, Xiazhi, and Taohua. They were then ordered to launch a solo assault on Dengbu Island. The Battle of Dengbu Island was an intense fight fought under extremely unfavorable conditions, with the enemy vastly outnumbering our forces. The officers and soldiers of the PLA demonstrated exceptional revolutionary heroism. With less than two regiments and lacking artillery support and sufficient ammunition, they fought fiercely for two days and nights, repelling repeated counterattacks by over six enemy regiments covered by aircraft, warships, and artillery fire. They inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy, killing or capturing more than 4,000 soldiers. After neutralizing the enemy’s fighting capacity, they voluntarily withdrew from combat on the night of November 5 and safely returned to Taohua Island. Many revolutionary martyrs gave their precious lives in the battle, making significant contributions to the liberation of Zhoushan and Putuo.

Construction of the monument began on December 1, 1983. After six months of meticulous design and construction, it was completed on April 30, 1984. The unveiling ceremony was held on May 17 of the same year, which marked the 34th anniversary of the liberation of Zhoushan. The entire monument consists of a base and main body, standing 15 meters tall and constructed entirely of reinforced concrete. The base is 2.8 meters high, 11 meters long, and 6 meters wide, with its surface clad in ivory and pink marble. At the center of the ivory marble section is an inscription in gold-plated characters measuring 18 characters long, personally penned by Teng Haiqing, former commander of the 21st Army: “Eternal Glory to the Revolutionary Martyrs Who Bravely Sacrificed Their Lives in the Battle of Dengbu Island!” The front and back of the marble feature inscriptions from the People’s Government of Putuo District, titled “The Monument Inscription for the Revolutionary Martyrs of the Battle of Dengbu Island,” written in memory of the fallen heroes. The names of the 380 revolutionary martyrs who died heroically in the battle are engraved on 26 ivory marble plaques arranged along the east and west sides of the base, listing their names, positions, and hometowns. The main body of the monument, adorned with pink marble borders, stands 12.2 meters tall and is finely crafted from white cement and white stone chips. Near the top is a shining red star, beneath which are seven one-meter-square golden characters reading “Monument to Revolutionary Martyrs,” handwritten by Teng Haiqing. The radiant white main structure and the base form a unified whole, standing proudly amidst the green pines, adding a solemn and respectful atmosphere to the entire structure. In 1989, auxiliary facilities were expanded, including the addition of two leisure memorial pavilions and plazas on the northeast and southwest sides of the monument, bringing the total area to 1,320 square meters.

In June 1994, the Monument to Revolutionary Martyrs on Qinglong Mountain was designated as a municipal-level patriotic education base by the Municipal Party Committee Propaganda Department. It is managed by the Civil Affairs Bureau of Putuo District. Every year before Tomb-Sweeping Day, the bureau carries out maintenance work on the monument and its grounds, while the gardening department regularly landscapes the surrounding area and cleans the monument and auxiliary facilities to provide visitors with a comfortable environment.

Since its completion, the Monument to Revolutionary Martyrs on Qinglong Mountain has been widely visited and revered by the public. Around Tomb-Sweeping Day each year, it attracts numerous elementary and middle school students, government officials, PLA soldiers, and armed police officers who come to pay their respects. Around July 1 each year, many new Party members take their oath of membership here, while students hold ceremonies for joining the Communist Youth League and the Young Pioneers. Volunteer guides at the monument, including Ding Ruiding, Yan Bing’an, and Zhang Xiaokang, provide free tours to inspire young people to study diligently, contribute to building our great nation, and appreciate the hard-won nature of today’s happy life, achieved through the blood and sacrifice of revolutionary martyrs. Located at the political, economic, and cultural heart of our district and the site of the district party committee and government, the monument commemorates the Battle of Dengbu Island—the largest and fiercest engagement in the entire Zhoushan Campaign. As a result, it draws large numbers of visitors and has become the district’s foremost patriotic education base.
