Former Residence of Ma Zhanshan

The former residence of Ma Zhanshan is a protected cultural relic site of Tianjin.

The former residence of Ma Zhanshan is located at No. 11 Hunan Road. It is a brick-and-wood structure building constructed in the 1920s, with a main two-story section, partial three-story areas, and a basement. The architectural style is eclectic. No. 11 Hunan Road was originally an ordinary residential house, but ever since it was identified as Ma Zhanshan’s former residence in Tianjin a few years ago, it has ceased to be just an ordinary small building. Several households still live here today, and if outsiders walk into the building, residents will often greet them proactively: “Are you here to see where Ma Zhanshan used to live? It’s right here.” Although Ma Zhanshan was just a resident over seventy years ago, the current residents still regard him as their neighbor.

The former residence of Ma Zhanshan was the home of Ma Zhanshan — a former Northeast Army general, commander of the Heihe Garrison, chairman of the Heilongjiang Provincial Government, concurrently governor of Heilongjiang Province under the puppet state of Manchukuo and minister of military and political affairs of Manchukuo, member of the Military Committee of the Nationalist Government, and commander-in-chief of the Northeast Anti-Japanese Allied Forces — during his time in Tianjin from 1934 to 1937. Built in the 1930s, the building is situated on what was then Severn Road in the British Concession of Tianjin (also known as “No. 40, Yan’an Li, No. 46 Road, British Concession of Tianjin”) (now No. 11 Hunan Road, Heping District, Tianjin). It is a historically styled building under general protection.
