Site of Maogen Building

The Site of Maogen Building is a cultural relic protection unit of Tianjin.

The Maogen Building is located at No. 121 Changde Road. Constructed in 1937, it is a high-end apartment building. It features a mixed structure, with four floors in the central section and three floors on both wings, as well as a semi-basement. The layout of the building and its residential units were designed according to a new lifestyle—each floor centers around a stairwell with living units arranged symmetrically. Each unit is designed with the living room as the core, featuring independent bedrooms, studies, kitchens, servant rooms, and shared bathrooms. Some bedrooms even have en-suite bathrooms. The exterior of the building contrasts large areas of dark glazed brick walls with light-colored balcony blocks. Rectangular, corner, and round windows create a dynamic interplay, resulting in a design that is both simple and bright while showcasing the structural beauty of modern architecture—embodying typical characteristics of modernist design.
