Pingyang County Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Hall
The Pingyang County Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Hall is a classic red tourism attraction.
Pingyang County is a veteran revolutionary base area with a long history of revolutionary struggle. From the winter of 1926 to the spring of 1927, members of the Wenzhou Independent Branch of the Communist Party of China, including Wang Guozhen and Zhang Peinong, along with Ye Tingpeng, Lin Zhen, and Wu Xinzhi, launched a peasant movement centered in Jiangnan (now Cangnan County); in February 1928, the Pingyang County Committee of the Communist Party of China was established. In May 1930, peasant Red Guards joined the 13th Red Army in attacking Pingyang County town. In September 1935, after the Red Army Advance Detachment entered southern Zhejiang, it first established the Rui-Ping-Tai revolutionary base. After the outbreak of the War of Resistance against Japan, the Fujian-Zhejiang Border Provisional Provincial Committee and the Red Army Advance Detachment were stationed in Pingyang, and the following spring, the Fujian-Zhejiang Border Anti-Japanese Salvation Cadre School was held at Shanmen. In May 1939, the Provisional Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China in Zhejiang was founded at Yuqingyan; in July, the First Congress of the Communist Party of China in Zhejiang was convened at Guanjian and Matougang. Throughout various historical periods, more than 1,000 martyrs sacrificed their lives in Pingyang.
The Pingyang County Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Hall is located at the southern foot of Fengshan Mountain in Ponan, the county seat. It was initially built in 1959, officially completed and opened to the public in 1961. Covering an area of 4,100 square meters with a construction area of over 370 square meters, the memorial hall is built against Fengshan Mountain, facing west. Its main structure is an exhibition hall, supplemented by a fishpond, flower beds, and lawns. The entire building features a terraced and garden-style layout, enclosed by walls. The exhibition hall is a single-story building with an area of 240 square meters, designed in the style of a classical palace courtyard. It has a mourning platform at the front and a surrounding corridor. At the center of the hall is a large screen backed with black granite, inscribed with the gold-plated words “Dying for the people is glory even in death,” handwritten by Mao Zedong. The back of the screen displays a map of the Pingyang County revolutionary base areas. The walls of the hall feature portraits and biographies of 68 martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the democratic revolution period. The hall also exhibits 85 artifacts from that era, such as weapons and daily necessities, and displays photographs and life stories of several martyrs who died during the socialist construction period.
The Pingyang County Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Hall is a cultural heritage site of Pingyang County and a patriotic education base of Wenzhou City.
