The Former Residence of Martyr Wang Guozhen is a cultural tourism attraction and a classic red tourism site.
Wang Guozhen (1900–1931), originally named Yang Liu with the courtesy name Shucai, was from Pucheng in Pingyang County (now part of Cangnan County). He joined the Communist Party of China in 1925 and was one of the key members of the Wenzhou Independent Branch of the CPC. In 1926, he attended the Sixth Peasant Movement Training Institute hosted by Mao Zedong. After completing the course, he was sent as a central special envoy to southern Zhejiang to carry out peasant movement work, actively organizing peasant associations and leading armed struggles. He was elected president of the Yongjia County Peasant Association. He was one of the earliest organizers and leaders of the peasant movement in southern Zhejiang during the Great Revolution period, and one of the founders of the Southern Zhejiang Special Committee and the 13th Red Army during the Agrarian Revolutionary War. He attended the National Soviet Areas Congress as a representative of the Wenzhou-Taizhou guerrilla zone, served as secretary of the Southern Zhejiang Special Committee of the CPC and secretary of the Wenzhou Central County Committee, and made great contributions to the party’s organizational development and armed struggle in southern Zhejiang. On December 11, 1931, he was arrested due to betrayal by a traitor and was executed on Songtaishan Mountain in downtown Wenzhou.
The Former Residence of Martyr Wang Guozhen is located in Ximenwai Village, Pucheng Township, Cangnan, and is a quadrangle courtyard consisting of 25 rooms. It has a history of over 160 years and covers an area of 1,182 square meters. In 2006, the CPC Cangnan County Committee and the County People’s Government invested more than 300,000 yuan to carry out emergency restoration of the residence, adhering to the principle of preserving its original architectural style. On June 26, the newly renovated Former Residence of Wang Guozhen held a grand completion ceremony and was officially opened to the public. A plaque inscribed with “Former Residence of Martyr Wang Guozhen,” written by Lu Shengliang, then director of the Standing Committee of the Wenzhou Municipal People’s Congress, hangs above the entrance. Inside the residence, there is an exhibition hall divided into three sections displaying a large number of precious historical relics and photographic materials, showcasing the revolutionary life of Martyr Wang Guozhen.
