Former Site of the Training Unit of the Min-Xiang Border Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Column

The Former Site of the Training Unit of the Min-Xiang Border Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Column is a classic destination on China's red tourism trail.

The Training Unit of the Min-Xiang Border Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Column was a cadre team composed of backbone members from the Red Army’s Advance Division, totaling around forty to fifty personnel divided into six squads. The unit was led by Captain Yang Fawang and Political Commissar Liu Hengyun. Its main responsibilities were training military and political cadres and protecting the provincial Party committee’s headquarters. In January 1938, the Training Unit moved into Datun Village along with the provisional provincial committee.

When the Training Unit gathered at the Zheng Clan Ancestral Hall in Datun Village for military theory classes, Liu Ying and Su Yu often came to give lectures. Liu Ying focused on the situation and tasks, the Party’s anti-Japanese policies, and mass work, while Su Yu lectured on strategies and tactics for combatting the Japanese and waging guerrilla warfare. Personnel attending the cadre training sessions organized by the provisional provincial committee also often joined these lessons here. With no desks available, the trainees used door panels and benches as writing desks, and bricks or stones as chairs, all the while listening attentively and taking meticulous notes.

The Former Site of the Training Unit of the Min-Xiang Border Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Column — the Zheng Clan Ancestral Hall — is located in Datun Village, Shanmen Town, Pingyang County. It lies about 100 meters from the provisional provincial committee’s headquarters. The ancestral hall is a five-room, single-story structure built of brick and wood, with a small courtyard in front.

The Former Site of the Training Unit of the Min-Xiang Border Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Column is part of the national red tourism classic site cluster — the Former Sites of the Revolutionary Base in Southern Zhejiang (Pingyang). It is also recognized as a national patriotic education base.
