Former Site of the Provisional Provincial Military Command of the Fujian-Zhejiang Border Region

The Former Site of the Provisional Provincial Military Command of the Fujian-Zhejiang Border Region is a cultural relic protection unit of Pingyang County and a classic red tourism destination.

In 1938, the Provisional Provincial Military Command of the Fujian-Zhejiang Border Region was stationed at Longjing Chan Temple, situated on the southwestern foothills of Fengling Mountain in Shanmen Town, Pingyang County. Su Yu was in charge of the overall work of the military command, Zhang Wenbi handled political affairs, and Wang Shouzhi managed the radio station. The troops were composed of three companies and one training unit, stationed in Shanmen Street, Fenglin, Matougang, and Datun. Su Yu’s office (which also served as his bedroom) was located in the east wing of the temple. At that time, he often burned the midnight oil here preparing lessons for the Anti-Japanese Salvation Cadre School. The opening piece of the “Collected Military Writings of Su Yu,” which served as the main teaching material for the cadre school and training unit students — the “Lecture Outline on Guerrilla Tactics” — was drafted at Longjing Chan Temple.

The Former Site of the Provisional Provincial Military Command of the Fujian-Zhejiang Border Region is located in a small mountain hollow on the southwestern foothills of Fengling Mountain in Shanmen Town, Pingyang County, and is now Longjing Chan Temple. A signboard at the temple entrance reads “Provisional Provincial Military Command of the Fujian-Zhejiang Border Region,” inscribed by General Zhang Wenbi, former deputy director of the Political Department of the provisional military command and former deputy commander of the Nanjing Military Region.

Originally named Longjing Nunnery, the temple faces south, overlooking Chou Stream and the peaks of Nan Yan. Surrounded by dense bamboo forests, it enjoys a tranquil environment. It is one of the eighteen ancient temples of the millennia-old Nan Yan Mountain range. The main hall of the temple features a post-and-lintel wooden structure, with small side wings on the east and west. Upon entering, there is a rectangular courtyard, and the total floor area is approximately 500 square meters. There are two wells within and outside the temple grounds, both known for their sweet and clear water, historically called Dragon Wells. After the Red Army vanguard division stationed in Shanmen began using the water from the Dragon Wells, locals revered the wells as the “Red Army Wells.”

The Former Site of the Provisional Provincial Military Command of the Fujian-Zhejiang Border Region is a cultural relic protection unit of Pingyang County. It is part of the National Red Tourism Classic Sites — the group of historic sites of the Southern Zhejiang (Pingyang) Revolutionary Base — and serves as a national patriotic education base.
