Martyrs' Cemetery at Shanmen

The Martyrs' Cemetery at Shanmen is a cultural tourism attraction and a classic site of red tourism.

Pingyang Shanmen was an important part of the guerrilla base in southern Zhejiang and served as the revolutionary center of Pingxi District, which the enemy referred to as the "Red Central Area." During the New Democratic Revolution period, Pingxi District produced numerous outstanding revolutionary figures. According to incomplete statistics, over a thousand people were arrested or killed across the district, more than 1,000 civilian houses were demolished or burned, and 117 martyrs were officially recognized by the provincial civil affairs department. It is one of the areas in southern Zhejiang that paid the heaviest price during the revolutionary struggle. These martyrs wrote a magnificent chapter in history with their blood.

The Martyrs' Cemetery at Shanmen is located at the southern foot of Fengling Mountain in Shanmen Town, Pingyang County, south of the former site of the Fujian-Zhejiang Border Anti-Japanese Salvation Cadre School. It was built in 1957. The cemetery faces south and measures 24 meters in width and 30 meters in depth, covering an area of 720 square meters, with walls built around it. The burial area is divided into two levels, rectangular in shape, and surrounded by brick and stone railings. The surrounding area is shaded by lush green pines and cypresses. In front of the cemetery stands a tall memorial monument made of reinforced concrete, inscribed with eight large characters: “Died for the Country, Immortalized Forever.” To the left of the cemetery lies the tomb of two unnamed martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the Battle of Baiqutian in Shamenzhen on June 11, 1936, while fighting with the Red Army Advance Division. To the right is the tomb of Chen Zhijin, a martyr born in 1912 in Shangdaozhuang, Shanmen, who died in battle against the Japanese in She County, Anhui, on November 1941. The main large tomb in the front houses the remains of more than 20 martyrs, including Lin Ruiqing, Zeng Zhongyu, Yang Qingmei, Hu Aiyu, and Pan Lianying.

The Martyrs' Cemetery at Shanmen is a cultural relic protection unit of Pingyang County. It is also part of the National Red Tourism Classic Sites — the Former Sites of the Revolutionary Base in Southern Zhejiang (Pingyang), and serves as a national patriotic education base.
