Former office site of Su Yu in Shanmen

The former office site of Su Yu in Shanmen is a classic red tourism attraction.

In January 1938, the temporary provincial military command of the Fujian-Zhejiang Border Region moved from Datun Village in Shanmen Township to Longjing Chan Temple, located in a small mountain hollow on the southwestern side of Fengling Mountain at the back of Shanmen Street. The office of Su Yu, staff officer of the provincial military command, was set up in the east wing of Longjing Nunnery.

Su Yu’s office also served as the place where he received guests. The room was sparsely furnished, containing only a small wooden bed and a thin cotton quilt. A towel hung by the bedside, and a lantern and military backpack were mounted on the wall. In those days, to prepare lectures for students at the Anti-Japanese Cadre School, Su Yu often stayed up late working in this small room. The opening chapter of the “Collected Military Writings of Su Yu”—“Lecture Outline on Guerrilla Tactics”—which served as the main teaching material for cadets and instructor teams at the school, was drafted here. In the quiet of the night, when tired, he would refresh himself with a cup of spring water or a splash of cold water on the face, or climb the path east of Longjing Chan Temple to visit the students at the Anti-Japanese Cadre School. At dawn, he would go to the Mountain Artillery Platform at the entrance of Shanmen Street to inspect and guide the troops’ military training. In early March of the same year, when Zeng Shan arrived in Shanmen, Liu Ying and Su Yu met with him here.

The former office site of Su Yu in Shanmen is a cultural relic protection unit of Pingyang County. It is part of the National Red Tourism Classic Scenic Area—the Zhejiang South (Pingyang) Revolutionary Base Site Cluster—and is also a National Patriotic Education Base.
