Former Site of Wanchuntang Pharmacy as a Transportation Liaison Station

The former site of Wanchuntang Pharmacy as a transportation liaison station is a classic red tourism attraction.

Wanchuntang Pharmacy once served as a transportation liaison station for the underground Communist Party in the Beigang area of Pingyang. At that time, Lin Mingqian, a well-known local doctor, used his identity as the pharmacy owner as a cover to gather intelligence for the underground party. His wife was from Tingtai Village behind the Tingmen Pavilion and was from the same village—and had relatives—with the captain of the Kuomintang’s plainclothes squad. Lin Mingqian took advantage of this connection and often had his wife visit Tingtai Village under the pretext of going to her parents’ home to gather intelligence on the enemy. The Kuomintang plainclothes captain also frequently came to Wanchuntang to eat and drink, during which he inadvertently revealed the “communist suppression” and “village pacification” plans of the stubborn faction of the Kuomintang. During the War of Resistance against Japan and the Liberation War, Wanchuntang also operated as an agency post office for Shanmen. Party organizations from Shanghai, Northern Jiangsu, Anhui, and other areas often sent propaganda materials, newspapers, and magazines to the Shanmen agency post office via the postal service, where Lin Mingqian would pass them on to the underground Communist Party organization in southern Zhejiang. During the war years, when the underground party suffered from a shortage of medicine and doctors, Lin Mingqian always did his best to help resolve these issues. When the county committee established a guerrilla rear hospital for the She ethnic group in Huaixi, Shanmen, many of the medicines used at the hospital were procured with his help. He also frequently risked his life, trekking over mountains and through valleys, to provide medical treatment and deliver medicine to the wounded and sick at the underground party outposts. Sometimes, when the pharmacy was too busy for him to leave, he would ask his uncle Lin Jie to help out, or sometimes his uncle Lin Shuhuai would go up the mountain to provide medical care and deliver medicine.

The former site of Wanchuntang Pharmacy as a transportation liaison station is located at the entrance of the old street in Shanmen, facing southwest with its back to the northeast, featuring a small central courtyard. It is a small quadrangle courtyard with characteristics typical of southern Zhejiang.
